Who are Beyond Ordinary?

Beyond Ordinary is Health and Social Care Training Company that helps people provide rights based support. Laura and Eve are the founders of Beyond Ordinary. Laura has worked as a senior advocate, mentoring disability advocates and currently works as a university disability studies lecturer and project manager, designing and delivering rights training in a disability service.  Eve is an Occupational Therapist. She has a background in disability research and current works in an organisational change role in a disability service.  Both Laura and Eve began their careers in direct support work in disability services.

What is Flip the Script?

It’s a way of facilitating a group that teaches decision making skills. A Flip the Script group encourages people to take risks, experience conflict and navigate failure. Our first pilot found that people learned decision making skills, increased their confidence and became more self determined. 

 

What will I learn?

You will learn about:

• The House that History Built - the history and culture of disability supports in Ireland

• Heavily Managed Lives - dismantling how we typically provide support

• The Power of Autonomy - why being in charge of your own life matters

• Doing Nothing is Doing Something - the nuts and bolts of delivering a Flip the Script Group

What will I have to do?

 

• Attend online sessions at the following dates and times:

  • Saturday 23rd of March 10am - 3pm

  • Sunday 24th of March 10am - 3pm

  • Tuesday 2nd of April 7:30pm - 9:00pm

  • Tuesday 9th of April 7:30pm - 9:00pm

  • Tuesday 23rd of April 7:30 - 9:00pm

  • Tuesday 7th of May 7:30pm - 9:00pm

 

• Participate openly in group discussions

• Set up a group with 4-8 participants 

• Facilitate 6 weekly 2 hour group sessions

• Send in reflective submissions and group outcome measures

 

Is it Flip the Script certified?

No, not yet. This course is a pilot. We have facilitated Flip the Script groups and now we are testing it as a train facilitator model. 

 

Is there a cost?

No. As this is a pilot course there is no cost. However we do require your commitment to full participation if you are selected, as places are very limited. 

 

Why do Flip the Script?

Let us answer your question with a series of questions. Are you someone who wants to push boundaries? Do you dream of supporting people to do what they really want to do? Do you want to try something new? 

 

Through Flip the Script you will learn 

 

• How to support people through ordinary conflict instead of managing conflict for people

• How to support people through failure, without preventing them from experiencing it

• How to create a space for real life decision making

• How to support people to be in control of their own lives whatever that may look like

• How to make your job more interesting and fun!

 

What will I get from Flip the Script?

You will get the skills and manual to deliver a Flip the Script Group. You will be introduced to a network of like minded, courageous Health and Social Care Professionals and be a part of the beginning of something innovative.
